Search for the Truth

3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

This was a really cute book. A nice romantic story that left a sweet feeling after I had finished.

Tessa’s mother dies from a heart attack after taking a new cancer drug. She hears of some other people suffering heart complications following the same treatment and decides to use her journalism talents to investigate. With the encouragement of her brother she successfully gains a job as the communications manager, working closely with the handsome president of research and development Jim Knight. Jim has only been back to the company for a little while, having left two years prior when he found his girlfriend in a compromising position with his then boss. Now he is back and wanting to make an impact on the company, without having to worry about the complications of an office relationship. And then he meets his new communications manager…  Cue lots of cute scenes, sparks flying and exes seething, all while Tessa is trying to discover if Jim is ultimately responsible for the death of her mother.

No doubt about it, this was a cute book. However it lacked a lot of substance for me. I like my romances with a lot more passion and tension. It was completely and totally predictable. That’s not a bad thing with a romance a lot of the time, however it was a little TOO predictable. It just lacked a bit of excitement and a bit more drama. And I found it to be slightly lacking in the sexy department.

I really didn’t like Tessa. I found that considering that she was an investigative journalist, some of the things that she did and the decisions that she made were a bit (or a lot) silly. And I understand that a lot of women (myself included) are ashamed and paranoid about certain aspects of their body. I’m fairly sure that all of us women are. But there is a scene when they first get together and she assumes he is disgusted by her body, and he has to remind her again and again of how beautiful she was… It killed the sexy for me. I found myself rolling my eyes and willing them just to get on with it.

The blossoming romance was lacking something for me too… Maybe its because Jim seemed like such a strong and powerful character, sleeps with her and becomes a total needy whiny puppy dog. I had visions of him nipping at her heels.

It dragged on a bit in parts, and the ending was predictable and average. But it wasn’t a bad read. Freeman has a nice style of writing, it was easy to read and very sweet. I did enjoy it, just not enough for me to bump up the star rating.

Overall a solid 3 stars.

Would I recommend it?

Yes, but only for cute romance fans who don’t mind the lack of excitement, and are content with a lot of cute, corny and sweet!
